Under the heading “Rubberband Box Map Tools” select the appropriate radio button (Zoom In, Zoom Out ). Yes, the “Zoom to County” tool makes this a simple task. Select the county you wish to view from the drop down box under the heading “Zoom to County:” After selecting a county, click on any one of the orange “ Click to map new selections” links. After clicking the “Click to map new selections” link, please wait a moment as the map refreshes. Note that dial up connections will take longer to display the map.

How do I create a thematic map based on local characteristics?

You have three geographic features to choose from when creating a thematic map:

1. County

2. Municipality (Cities, Villages, Towns)

3. Census Tract (Small, relatively stable geographic areas that usually have a population of 2,500 to 8,000 defined by the Census Bureau.)

To create a thematic map based on county data you would choose from the “By County:” dropdown box. To create a thematic map based on municipality data you would choose from the “By Municipality:” dropdown box and so on. After selecting a theme from one of three dropdown boxes (remember that only one theme can be mapped at a time), click one of the orange “Click to map new selections” links. After clicking the “Click to map new selections” link, please wait a moment as the map refreshes. Note that dial up connections will take longer to display the map.

I want to see the actual data behind the map. Can I do that?

Yes, but you will need to have Microsoft Excel installed on your machine. If you do, select a theme from one of the three dropdown boxes under “Select Local Characteristics”. If you have a theme selected click the link “Click here to view the Data” under the heading “Select Local Characteristics:”. After clicking the link you will be prompted to either open or save the file. If you choose to open the file, Microsoft Excel should start and the file should be displayed.

Can the geographical features and food related resources be turned on and off?

Yes, under the headings “Geographical Features:” and “Food Related Resources:” there are lists of features that you can turn on and off. A check means the feature is turned on and no check means the feature is off. Note that a feature may be turned on but may not be visible. When the map is zoomed out, features such as municipality labels may clutter the view of the map. Therefore the labels will not show until you reach a lower zoom level. To update the map according to your changes click any one of the orange “Click to map new selections” links. After clicking the “Click to map new selections” link, please wait a moment as the map refreshes. Note that dial up connections will take longer to display the map.

Is there a way to create a map for printing?

Yes, to create a map for printing click the link “Click here to create a map for printing” which is to the right of the heading “Legend”. A new window will be open with your map and legend displayed. To insert a title, highlight the text “Click here and type your title” and type in your new title.

Yes a feature may be turned on but may not be visible. When the map is zoomed out, features such as municipality labels may clutter the view of the map. Therefore the labels will not show until you reach a lower zoom level.

Did you remember to click the orange link “Click to map new selections”? After all changes except for Zoom in, Zoom out, Center at, and Full extent you need to click the orange link “Click to map new selections”.

Can I map more than one local characteristic theme at a time?

No, only one local characteristic theme may be mapped at one time. You can map more than one food related resource item.
